Legacy Central BBS

I’ve added a very, very cool feature to the site: The Legacy Central BBS.

I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and now i can.

Please check it out, the URL is very easy to remember:

New Tires

Well, too much camber and toe and not enough tire rotation finally cought up with me. I blew one of my front tires this morning because it was corded. The other front was the same, so i decided to just replace them all.

Instead of getting some more high-performance tires, i decided to get an intermediate tire that would get me safely through the winter but not compromise too much in the dry.

Big-O is a large chain in the west, and i bought a set of their branded Legacy Touring Plus H tires, the same as i had on my old sedan, in a 205/55-16 size. It’s a bit tall, even more than stock, but i’ll get a bit better mileage and the blowout happened at 7:30 in the morning. I didn’t want to drive on a spare more than a few miles, and very few other sizes in a 16″ were available.

Perhaps by next spring i’ll get a set of 17″ wheels and stickier tires.

I’m Still Here…

The lack of news is because, well, there’s not much new!

I’ve got the wierdest problem with my stereo, the sub amp doesn’t turn on and stay on, and it seems to be related to the engine speed, but not directly. I had the alternator tested, but the results were very odd, so i’m not sure that i want to go replacing stuff to fix it yet.

I do want to sell my DMS 40mm coilovers. Since i’m not campaigning the wagon on the autocross course anymore, i don’t think i need such a radical setup. I’ll probably resort to something closer to stock. If anyone out there is interested, email me for details.

In the meantime, the car still runs great 😀

Addendum To Confession

What i’m going to say might sound heretical to some of you, but that’s tough: RWD is a LOT more fun to drive in an autocross course, especially when the car weighs almost 1000lbs less than my Wagon.

I came home with another 1st place plaque from the event on Sunday, granted it was in a two-person class, but that’s the short part of the story.

Four people now drive this car, but i was the fastest of the day in it, by more than two-tenths of a second. Not only that, but i even bested a much better prepped, 12A powered RX-7 with race tires, suspension and numerous other tweaks. Our car rides on stock suspension, Falken Azenis on the stock wheels, a test-pipe, modified ignition and electric fan. We removed the A/C also, and PS wasn’t installed from the factory.

Planned upgrades are many, but i’d like to get a smaller steering wheel very soon. Being 6’2″ and driving an FB RX-7 is silly, my helmet sticks out of the sunroof at least 2″, but it’s very fun. The weight of the car is very apparent, as i can toss it around and get it sliding, but the brakes and steering are much more responsive because of the lower inertia.

I’m considering selling my DMS 40s from the Wagon, but that’s because they’re a maintenance item, and i’m not going to race it anymore. I’ll probably get an AGX/GC setup for the street. I don’t plan on selling anything else off the car, however, as it’s a terribly fun daily-driver as it is.

Confession

I have something to confess, driving an AWD turbo car on the autocross course may be fast, but it’s not terribly fun.

Driving the daily-driven car on the autocross course is a bit nerve-wracking when it’s got a few miles on it.

Beating on a project car is fun, especially when it’s a lightweight, RWD car with decent power and doesn’t act as anyone’s daily.

To that end, i’m retiring the Wagon from service as a racer, and directing my attention and some finacnes into building a fun, fast project car.

The car is a 1984 GSL-SE RX-7 that a few friends have raced several times this season. It’s got the 13B with EFI and an LSD. We’ve powdercoated the stock 14s (low weight), put some Falken Azenis tires on for superior grip, removed the AC and a number of other reasonably easy to strip items, replaced the cat with a test pipe, fabricated a custom ignition and put in a K&N air filter.

The car is fun to drive. RWD is a blast, and since the car has a completely stock suspension, it’s pretty balanced but very rewarding. No power steering makes some of the corners a bit of an exercise, but PS can get in the way in quick transitions.

I also beat a turbo MR2 and an Integra in SM2 to take my first 1st place ever. I’m stoked.

Additions

I’ve added a few things to the Library.

The first is a scanned in 91 Legacy brochure that Brian sent me. He requested it from SOA and they promptly photocopied the one they had and sent it to him. Now i have a brochure from all five years!

The other one is a Subaru Sales Force Guide. This is a guide meant for anyone involved in selling Subaru. It goes through the history of Subaru and all of its technological advantages over the competition. Very interesting stuff.

Update

Not a whole lot going on since i put the new exhaust bit on the car, so the lack of updates is basically due to that.

I did, however, get in a relatively minor accident on Monday afternoon. A red CRX was granted passage across a busy street, only to end up being crushed mildly with my front bumper. The CRX had it pretty bad, but my car barely noticed. There are some scratches, some splotches of red paint, and the headlight might be skewered a bit down. Also, the seatbelts will neither release or retract, so i’m going to have to call the local dealership and see what’s up with that.

I’m still trying to decide if it’s worth it to get it “actually” repaired.

My Intercooler Pt. 1

I do have the intercooler installed, and all setup right, but i just haven’t got around to taking pictures of the setup because of the changes i’ve made to it over the past two weeks.

I do have a page with the pix i took of it initially, so i’ll share that with you.

It does seem to be doing a good job of cooling the intake charge, as i can definitely feel a nice kick throughout the powerband.

More images to come…

Additions

I’ve added one very nice looking Touring Wagon to the Reader Rides Section. Frank’s 92 is an uncommon black color, and he put some black wheels on it as well.  Have a look

I’m going in to a local shop to have my intercooler installed today. It should be just a bit of welding and fitting, not too much, but not something that can be done well without the right tools.

I’m excited.
